Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Zookeeper / Exotic Animal Specialist to join our growing team. This is an incredible opportunity for an experienced professional to contribute to the well-being of a diverse collection of animals, including various exotic species, in a state-of-the-art facility. The role requires a strong understanding of animal behavior, husbandry practices, and a commitment to conservation. Key Responsibilities
- Provide daily care for a diverse range of exotic and native animal species, including feeding, watering, and enclosure maintenance.
- Observe and monitor animal health and behavior, reporting any changes or concerns to veterinary staff.
- Implement and maintain detailed animal enrichment programs to promote natural behaviors and psychological well-being.
- Clean and sanitize animal enclosures, ensuring a high standard of hygiene and safety.
- Assist with veterinary procedures, including restraint, medication administration, and record-keeping.
- Participate in animal training, focusing on positive reinforcement techniques for husbandry and medical behaviors.
- Educate visitors and volunteers about animal species, conservation efforts, and the centre's mission.
- Maintain accurate and thorough records of animal diets, treatments, behaviors, and enclosure conditions.
- Ensure strict adherence to safety protocols for staff, animals, and visitors.
- Contribute to habitat design and maintenance projects to enhance animal welfare.
Required Skills
- Minimum 2 years of professional experience as a zookeeper or exotic animal specialist.
- Proven experience with animal husbandry, care, and enrichment for a variety of species.
- Strong observational skills and knowledge of animal behavior and health indicators.
- Ability to perform physically demanding tasks in various weather conditions.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
- Ability to maintain detailed and accurate records.
- Demonstrated commitment to animal welfare and conservation.
- Valid driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications
- Degree or diploma in Zoology, Animal Science, Wildlife Biology, or a related field.
- Experience with operant conditioning and positive reinforcement animal training.
- First Aid and CPR certification.
- Experience with darting, capture, and restraint of various animal species.
- Knowledge of Canadian wildlife regulations and protocols.
