Job Description
As a Pediatric Hospital Porter, you will play a crucial role in the daily operations of our children’s wards and departments, ensuring the safe and comfortable transportation of our young patients, equipment, and medical supplies. This role requires a high degree of empathy, sensitivity, and professionalism, as you will interact directly with children, their families, and clinical staff. You will be an essential part of the care team, contributing to a positive and reassuring environment for our pediatric patients. Full training will be provided, and your Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check will be paid for by the Trust.
Key Responsibilities
- Safely transport pediatric patients, including those with special needs, to and from wards, treatment areas, and operating theatres.
- Move medical equipment, laboratory samples, patient records, and supplies throughout the hospital.
- Provide comfort and reassurance to children and their families during transport.
- Maintain a clean and tidy working environment, ensuring equipment is properly stored and sanitized.
- Communicate effectively and compassionately with patients, families, and all levels of hospital staff.
- Respond promptly to requests from medical and nursing staff for portering services.
- Adhere to all health and safety regulations and hospital policies, including infection control protocols.
- Assist with other general duties as required to support the smooth running of the pediatric department.
Required Skills
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, particularly with children and their families.
- A compassionate, patient, and empathetic approach.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Good physical stamina and the ability to perform tasks requiring manual handling.
- Reliability, punctuality, and a strong work ethic.
- Basic literacy and numeracy skills.
- Willingness to undergo and pass a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check (cost covered by the Trust).
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in a healthcare or care-giving environment.
- Experience working with children or vulnerable individuals.
- Basic First Aid certification.
- Knowledge of hospital environments and procedures.
