Job Description
Join AECOM as a Paleontological Monitor, ensuring strict compliance with environmental regulations on critical construction sites in Bakersfield, CA. This role is pivotal in safeguarding significant paleontological resources during excavation and development. You will be responsible for identifying, documenting, and recovering fossils, working closely with construction crews and project management to minimize impact and maintain project schedules. Key Responsibilities
- Conduct daily monitoring of construction excavations and grading activities for the presence of paleontological resources.
- Identify, recover, and document paleontological specimens according to established protocols and permits.
- Maintain detailed field notes, photographs, and records of discoveries and site activities.
- Communicate effectively with construction personnel, project managers, and lead paleontologists regarding compliance requirements and findings.
- Implement mitigation measures as required by environmental permits and project specific paleontological resource management plans.
- Ensure all monitoring activities adhere to safety regulations and company policies.
- Assist with fossil preparation, curation, and laboratory analysis as needed.
- Provide on-site training and guidance to construction crews on paleontological sensitivity awareness.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Paleontology, Geology, Archaeology, or a related field.
- Minimum of 12 months of professional experience in paleontological monitoring or field survey.
- Demonstrated ability to identify fossils and geological formations in various contexts.
- Proficiency in field documentation methods, including mapping, photography, and GPS data collection.
- Strong understanding of California environmental regulations (e.g., CEQA) pertaining to paleontological resources.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for effective interaction with diverse teams.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in challenging outdoor environments.
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Paleontology or a closely related discipline.
- Familiarity with local Bakersfield geology and fossiliferous units.
- Experience with advanced paleontological recovery techniques.
- OSHA 10 or 30-hour construction safety certification.
- Experience in the preparation and curation of paleontological specimens.
