Job Description
Centenary United Methodist Church is seeking a dedicated and talented Church Organist / Music Director to lead our weekend worship services and oversee aspects of our music program. This stable weekend role requires a passionate individual with a strong foundation in sacred music, excellent organ performance skills, and a collaborative spirit. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in creating inspiring musical experiences that enhance our worship and deepen congregational engagement.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as the primary organist for all weekend worship services and special liturgical events (e.g., Christmas, Easter, Holy Week).
- Collaborate with the Senior Pastor and worship team to plan and select appropriate hymns, anthems, and service music.
- Direct and rehearse the Chancel Choir, ensuring high-quality musical contributions to services.
- Oversee the maintenance and tuning schedule for the church organ and pianos.
- Recruit, train, and nurture musical volunteers and section leaders.
- Prepare and distribute worship music materials, including sheet music and rehearsal tracks.
- Provide accompaniment for soloists, instrumentalists, and congregational singing.
- Manage the music budget in coordination with the church administrator.
- Participate in regular staff meetings and contribute to the overall worship planning process.
- Potentially offer limited musical instruction or support for church-related events as needed.
Required Skills
- Proven proficiency in organ performance, particularly in a liturgical setting.
- Strong sight-reading abilities and improvisation skills.
- Experience directing adult choirs and leading congregational singing.
- Comprehensive knowledge of sacred music repertoire across various periods and styles.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with clergy, staff, and volunteers.
- Organizational skills for managing music libraries and schedules.

Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Music, Organ Performance, Church Music, or a related field.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience as a Church Organist or Music Director in a Protestant church setting.
- Familiarity with United Methodist liturgy and hymnal.
- Experience with other musical instruments (e.g., piano) and vocal coaching.
- Proficiency with music notation software (e.g., Sibelius, Finale) is a plus.
