Job Description

Are you passionate about history, architecture, and urban planning? The City of Abilene Planning Department is seeking a motivated Historic Preservation & Architecture Intern to join our team. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the field of historic preservation, contributing to projects that safeguard Abilene’s cultural legacy. You will work alongside experienced professionals, assisting with research, documentation, and the application of historic preservation guidelines. This role is ideal for students or recent graduates looking to make a tangible impact on community development and learn the intricacies of municipal planning processes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in conducting historical research and surveys of properties within designated historic districts.
  • Prepare documentation, including written reports, photographic inventories, and architectural drawings, for historic properties.
  • Support staff in reviewing development proposals for compliance with historic preservation guidelines and ordinances.
  • Participate in community outreach and educational initiatives related to historic preservation.
  • Aid in the development and maintenance of a comprehensive historic resource inventory.
  • Attend meetings with staff, community members, and preservation commissions as required.

Required Skills

  • Strong interest in historic preservation, architecture, urban planning, or related fields.
  • Excellent research, writing, and communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel).
  • Ability to interpret architectural drawings and historical documents.
  • Attention to detail and strong organizational abilities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in or a recent graduate of an accredited program in Historic Preservation, Architecture, Urban Planning, History, or a related discipline.
  • Basic knowledge of local, state, and federal historic preservation regulations (e.g., Secretary of the Interior's Standards).
  • Experience with GIS software or CAD programs (e.g., AutoCAD, SketchUp).
  • Prior volunteer or project experience in historic preservation.
