Job Description
We are seeking a skilled and safety-conscious Fossil Recovery Specialist with a strong background in heavy equipment operation to join our dynamic project team in Santa Clarita, CA. In this crucial role, you will be responsible for the controlled excavation and recovery of paleontological resources discovered during our construction projects. This position demands a unique blend of heavy machinery expertise, a keen eye for paleontological finds, and strict adherence to scientific protocols and safety standards. You will work closely with environmental teams and project managers to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and the careful preservation of significant fossil discoveries.
Key Responsibilities
- Safely operate various heavy equipment (e.g., excavators, backhoes, dozers) for precise and controlled fossil recovery and mitigation activities.
- Identify, document, and recover paleontological resources (fossils) in active construction environments under the guidance of a paleontologist.
- Implement field recovery protocols, including careful excavation, stabilization, jacketing, and collection of fossil specimens.
- Maintain detailed daily field notes, site logs, and photographic records of discoveries, excavation procedures, and site conditions.
- Ensure the integrity and proper chain of custody for all recovered specimens.
- Collaborate effectively with project managers, site superintendents, environmental specialists, and third-party paleontological consultants.
- Adhere strictly to all company safety policies, environmental regulations, and local, state, and federal guidelines related to paleontological resource management.
- Conduct initial on-site fossil preparation and facilitate secure transport to designated laboratory facilities.
Required Skills
- Proven proficiency in operating a variety of heavy construction equipment, including excavators, backhoes, and bulldozers.
- Valid heavy equipment operator certifications/licenses required by state and federal regulations.
- Basic knowledge of paleontological field methods, fossil identification, and geological contexts.
- Strong observational skills and meticulous attention to detail.
- Ability to work effectively and safely in challenging outdoor environments, including varied terrain and weather conditions.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
- Demonstrated commitment to safety and environmental stewardship.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Geology, Paleontology, Archaeology, Earth Sciences, or a related field.
- Previous experience on large-scale construction or excavation sites with an emphasis on environmental compliance or resource recovery.
- Experience with GPS or GIS for site mapping and documentation.
- First Aid/CPR certification.
