Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic Ichthyology & Aquarium Maintenance Intern to join our dedicated team. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the daily care and maintenance of a diverse collection of aquatic animals and their habitats. The intern will work closely with experienced aquarists, learning best practices in ichthyology, water quality management, exhibit design, and animal husbandry within a leading zoological institution.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist aquarists with daily feeding and care of various fish species and aquatic invertebrates.
- Perform routine cleaning and maintenance of aquatic exhibits, filtration systems, and life support equipment.
- Monitor water quality parameters (pH, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, salinity) and assist with necessary adjustments.
- Observe animal behavior and report any changes or concerns to senior staff.
- Participate in exhibit maintenance, including aquascaping, plant care, and substrate cleaning.
- Aid in the preparation of specialized diets for aquatic animals.
- Learn and adhere to all safety protocols and animal welfare guidelines.
- Document observations, feeding records, and water quality data accurately.
- Support educational programs and guest interactions related to aquatic exhibits as needed.
Required Skills
- Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a degree program in Biology, Marine Biology, Zoology, Aquaculture, Environmental Science, or a related field.
- Demonstrated strong interest in ichthyology, aquatic ecosystems, and animal husbandry.
- Ability to perform physical tasks, including lifting up to 50 lbs, standing for extended periods, and working in various environmental conditions.
- Strong attention to detail and observational skills.
- Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
- Ability to follow detailed instructions and work independently when necessary.
- Basic computer proficiency for data entry.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous volunteer or practical experience in an aquarium, zoo, pet store, or aquatic research setting.
- Familiarity with basic water quality testing procedures.
- Knowledge of various aquatic filtration systems.
- SCUBA certification (advantageous but not required).
