Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled and enthusiastic Church Organist / Music Director to lead our worship music program for a stable weekend role. This position is central to enhancing our worship services through inspiring musical leadership, both as an organist and as a director of our choir. The ideal candidate will possess exceptional organ performance skills, a deep understanding of sacred music, and the ability to work collaboratively with clergy, staff, and volunteers. Key Responsibilities
- Serve as the primary organist for all weekend worship services (Saturday evening and Sunday mornings), including special services during holiday seasons.
- Plan and select appropriate hymns, anthems, and service music in collaboration with the Senior Pastor, aligning with liturgical themes.
- Direct and rehearse the adult choir on a weekly basis, preparing them for worship services and special events.
- Recruit, train, and nurture new choir members and potential instrumentalists.
- Maintain the church's organ and other musical instruments in good working order, coordinating with technicians for tuning and repairs as needed.
- Oversee the church's music library, ensuring proper organization and maintenance of scores.
- Prepare and submit music selections for bulletins and projection in a timely manner.
- Provide musical accompaniment for funerals, weddings, and other special church events as requested, with additional compensation.
- Foster a collaborative and encouraging environment for all participants in the music ministry.
Required Skills
- Proficiency in organ performance, including a strong understanding of various organ literature and techniques.
- Experience in directing adult choirs with proven ability to lead engaging rehearsals.
- Comprehensive knowledge of Christian hymnody and liturgical music.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work collegially with clergy, staff, and volunteers.
- Familiarity with music notation software and basic office applications.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Music, Organ Performance, or a related field.
- At least 3-5 years of experience as an organist and/or music director in a church setting.
- Experience with other musical instruments (piano, keyboard) and ability to accompany.
- A working knowledge of Presbyterian worship traditions and liturgy.
