Job Description
Are you passionate about making a tangible difference in people’s lives? The Department of Justice and Public Safety is seeking a compassionate and dedicated Entry Level Victim Advocate to join our team in Baie Verte. This rewarding public sector role offers a unique opportunity to provide crucial support and guidance to victims of crime, helping them navigate the justice system and access vital resources. You will be a beacon of hope and support, ensuring victims feel heard, respected, and empowered during challenging times. This position is ideal for individuals with a strong sense of empathy, excellent communication skills, and a commitment to public service. Full training will be provided.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide emotional support and crisis intervention to victims of crime.
- Explain victim's rights and the criminal justice process in a clear and empathetic manner.
- Assist victims with safety planning and obtaining protective orders.
- Refer victims to community resources such as counseling, shelters, and financial assistance programs.
- Advocate on behalf of victims with law enforcement, prosecutors, and other agencies.
- Accompany victims to court proceedings and provide support during testimony.
- Maintain accurate and confidential client records.
- Collaborate with other victim service providers and community partners.
- Participate in ongoing training and professional development related to victim advocacy and trauma-informed care.
Required Skills
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Demonstrated strong interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written).
- Ability to show empathy, compassion, and sensitivity towards individuals experiencing trauma.
- Excellent organizational and time management abilities.
- Proficiency in basic computer applications (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- A valid driver's license and access to reliable transportation.
Preferred Qualifications
- Post-secondary education in social work, psychology, sociology, criminal justice, or a related field.
- Volunteer or paid experience in a supportive role, such as crisis lines, counseling, or community outreach.
- Knowledge of the Canadian criminal justice system.
- Familiarity with local community resources in Newfoundland and Labrador.
