Job Description
Join the City of Knoxville Public Works Department as a Trainee Fleet Mechanic through our comprehensive Apprenticeship Program. This is an exceptional entry-level opportunity for individuals passionate about mechanics who are eager to learn and grow within a supportive municipal environment. You will receive hands-on training and mentorship from experienced technicians, gaining practical skills in diagnosing, maintaining, and repairing a wide variety of government vehicles, from police cruisers and fire trucks to heavy equipment. This apprenticeship is designed to equip you with the knowledge and certifications needed for a successful career as a certified Fleet Mechanic.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist senior mechanics with routine maintenance and repair of city vehicles and equipment.
- Learn to diagnose mechanical issues under supervision, using diagnostic tools and equipment.
- Perform oil changes, tire rotations, brake inspections, and other preventative maintenance tasks.
- Help maintain a clean and organized shop environment, adhering to safety protocols.
- Shadow experienced technicians to observe and learn complex repair procedures.
- Complete assigned coursework and training modules as part of the apprenticeship curriculum.
- Document maintenance and repair activities accurately.
- Adhere to all departmental policies, procedures, and safety regulations.
Required Skills
- Strong mechanical aptitude and a genuine interest in vehicle repair.
- Ability to follow instructions and work effectively in a team environment.
- Eagerness to learn and commit to a long-term apprenticeship program.
- Basic understanding of tools and their safe usage.
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
- Physical ability to lift heavy objects, stand for extended periods, and work in various weather conditions.
Preferred Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED.
- Completion of vocational school automotive courses or equivalent experience.
- Previous experience in a workshop or automotive setting (e.g., car enthusiast, volunteer, basic repairs).
- ASE certifications or desire to obtain them.
