Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Forensic Chemist with a strong focus on toxicology and crime lab operations to join our dedicated team. The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting complex chemical analyses on evidence collected from crime scenes, primarily focusing on drug identification, controlled substances, and toxicological samples. This role requires meticulous attention to detail, adherence to strict chain-of-custody protocols, and the ability to interpret and present scientific findings in a clear and concise manner for legal proceedings. The Forensic Chemist will work within our state-of-the-art crime laboratory, contributing to critical criminal investigations and ensuring the highest standards of scientific rigor.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform qualitative and quantitative chemical analyses on a variety of forensic samples, including illicit drugs, controlled substances, and biological matrices for toxicological screening.
  • Operate and maintain sophisticated laboratory instruments such as GC-MS, LC-MS, FTIR, and UV-Vis spectrophotometers.
  • Interpret complex analytical data and generate comprehensive laboratory reports.
  • Maintain strict chain-of-custody for all evidence, ensuring proper documentation and handling.
  • Provide expert witness testimony in court regarding analytical findings and methodologies.
  • Develop and validate new analytical methods and procedures as needed.
  • Participate in proficiency testing and quality assurance programs.
  • Collaborate with law enforcement personnel, prosecutors, and other forensic scientists.
  • Ensure compliance with all laboratory safety protocols and accreditation standards (e.g., ANAB/ISO 17025).

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Chemistry, Forensic Science, or a closely related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in a forensic chemistry or toxicology laboratory setting.
  • Proficiency in operating and troubleshooting analytical instrumentation (GC-MS, LC-MS).
  • Thorough understanding of forensic analytical principles and techniques.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for report writing and court testimony.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow strict protocols.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Forensic Science, Chemistry, or Toxicology.
  • Certification by the American Board of Criminalistics (ABC) in Drug Analysis or Toxicology.
  • Experience with LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System).
  • Familiarity with ANAB/ISO 17025 accreditation standards.
