Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Music Copyright Specialist to join our Intellectual Property team in Oakland, CA. In this stable role, you will be instrumental in managing and protecting Universal Music Group’s vast catalog of musical copyrights. This position requires a strong understanding of copyright law, particularly within the music industry, and a meticulous approach to data management and legal documentation. You will work closely with legal counsel, business affairs, and licensing teams to ensure the proper registration, tracking, and enforcement of our intellectual property rights.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the end-to-end process of copyright registration for new musical works and sound recordings with relevant PROs (Performing Rights Organizations) and government agencies.
- Monitor global databases and online platforms for potential copyright infringements and assist in enforcement actions.
- Conduct thorough research on copyright ownership and licensing histories to support legal and business initiatives.
- Process and track copyright assignments, transfers, and licensing agreements.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date copyright metadata within internal databases and systems.
- Assist in preparing legal documents, reports, and presentations related to intellectual property matters.
- Collaborate with internal departments (e.g., A&R, production, sync licensing) to gather necessary copyright information.
- Stay informed on current developments in copyright law and industry best practices.
Required Skills
- Proven experience with copyright registration processes and intellectual property administration.
- Strong understanding of US and international copyright law, specifically as it applies to music.
- Proficiency in managing and navigating complex legal databases and content management systems.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Legal Studies, Music Business, or a related field.
- Experience working with major PROs (ASCAP, BMI, SESAC, PRS, etc.) or music publishers.
- Familiarity with digital rights management (DRM) technologies and online content identification tools.
- Prior experience in the music or entertainment industry legal department.
