Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and safety-conscious Bridge Painting Sandblaster (Mate) to join our infrastructure team in Mississauga, Ontario. In this role, you will be instrumental in preparing steel surfaces on bridges and other structures for painting, ensuring longevity and structural integrity. This is a hands-on position requiring attention to detail, adherence to safety protocols, and the ability to work effectively as part of a crew. You will support lead sandblasters and contribute to high-quality project delivery.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist lead sandblasters in setting up and operating sandblasting equipment.
- Prepare surfaces by removing old paint, rust, and contaminants from steel bridge components using sandblasting techniques.
- Ensure proper containment of blasting media and debris according to environmental regulations.
- Inspect prepared surfaces for cleanliness and profile, ensuring readiness for coating application.
- Maintain and clean sandblasting equipment, ensuring it is in good working order.
- Adhere strictly to all safety policies, procedures, and environmental guidelines on site.
- Work collaboratively with the painting and construction teams to ensure project timelines are met.
- Handle and dispose of hazardous waste materials responsibly.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support project completion.
Required Skills
- Proven experience assisting with sandblasting operations, preferably in bridge or heavy steel structures.
- Familiarity with various types of blasting media and equipment.
- Strong understanding of surface preparation standards (e.g., SSPC, NACE).
- Ability to work at heights and in varying weather conditions.
- Excellent safety awareness and commitment to safe work practices.
- Physical fitness and ability to lift heavy equipment and perform demanding tasks.
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation to job sites.
Preferred Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Certification in abrasive blasting (e.g., SSPC C-7, NACE CIP Level 1 or equivalent).
- Experience with other surface preparation methods (e.g., power tool cleaning).
- First Aid and WHMIS certification.
- Experience working in a unionized environment.
