Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Specialized Heavy Haul Escort Driver (Pilot Car Operator) to join our dynamic team. This role involves safely escorting oversized and overweight loads across various routes, primarily within Ontario but with potential for cross-provincial travel. The ideal candidate will possess a strong understanding of heavy haul regulations, exceptional road awareness, and a commitment to safety and precision. This position requires significant travel and a flexible schedule to accommodate project demands.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate pilot/escort vehicles in a safe and professional manner to ensure the secure transit of oversized loads.
- Communicate effectively with heavy haul truck drivers, logistics coordinators, and relevant authorities.
- Adhere strictly to all provincial and federal regulations governing oversized load transportation, including permit requirements and route restrictions.
- Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections of escort vehicles and equipment.
- Maintain accurate logs of activities, including routes, mileage, and incident reports.
- Manage traffic, direct vehicles, and implement temporary road closures as necessary to ensure safe passage.
- Utilize flags, signs, and lights as required to alert other motorists to the presence of an oversized load.
- Perform minor roadside adjustments or assistance for escorted loads when safe and necessary.
- Adapt to changing weather conditions, road closures, and unexpected delays with professionalism.
- Represent Trimac Transportation with the highest standards of professionalism and customer service.
Required Skills
- Valid Class G Driver's License (or equivalent) with a clean driving abstract.
- Proven experience as a pilot car driver or heavy haul escort.
- Thorough knowledge of Ontario's MTO regulations for oversized loads and pilot car operations.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and make critical decisions under pressure.
- Strong geographical knowledge, especially within Ontario.
- Flexibility to travel extensively and work irregular hours, including nights and weekends.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform physical tasks associated with the role.
Preferred Qualifications
- Commercial Driver's License (Class A or D) is an asset.
- Certification in traffic control or flagging.
- First Aid and CPR certification.
- Experience with diverse types of heavy haul loads (e.g., wind turbine components, industrial machinery).
- Familiarity with electronic logging devices (ELDs) and navigation software.
