Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Prior Authorization Specialist to join our remote team. In this critical role, you will be responsible for processing prior authorization requests for prescription medications, ensuring compliance with medical policies, and facilitating timely access to necessary treatments for our members. This position requires strong communication skills, a solid understanding of pharmacy benefits, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, virtual environment. As a key member of our remote workforce, you will contribute directly to patient care by managing the authorization process from initiation to resolution, collaborating with healthcare providers, pharmacies, and internal teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Receive, review, and process prior authorization requests for prescription medications in accordance with established guidelines and medical policies.
- Verify patient eligibility, benefits, and prescription drug coverage.
- Communicate effectively with prescribers, pharmacies, and members to gather necessary clinical information and provide status updates.
- Document all actions, communications, and decisions accurately and thoroughly in the designated systems.
- Collaborate with pharmacists, nurses, and medical directors as needed to resolve complex cases or gain clinical insight.
- Adhere to all regulatory requirements, privacy laws (HIPAA), and company policies.
- Manage a caseload efficiently, prioritizing tasks to meet deadlines and service level agreements.
- Identify and escalate issues or trends that may impact service delivery or patient care.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of pharmaceutical products, medical terminology, and prior authorization processes.
Required Skills
- High School Diploma or GED
- 2+ years of experience in a pharmacy, healthcare, or insurance setting, preferably with prior authorization experience
- Proficiency with medical and pharmaceutical terminology
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Excellent organizational and time management abilities
- Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite and experience with electronic health records (EHR) or pharmacy management systems
- Ability to work independently and maintain productivity in a remote work environment
- Demonstrated attention to detail and accuracy
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in a related field
- Pharmacy Technician certification (CPhT)
- Experience with OptumRx or other major Pharmacy Benefit Manager (PBM) systems
- Experience working in a remote or virtual team setting
