Job Description

The Disabled American Veterans (DAV) is seeking a dedicated Veteran Affairs Outreach Assistant to join our team in St. Joseph, MO. In this vital role, you will be on the front lines, connecting with veterans and their families to ensure they are aware of and can access the critical services and benefits they have earned. You will coordinate and participate in outreach events, provide crucial information, and act as a compassionate point of contact, guiding veterans through complex processes. This position requires empathy, strong organizational skills, and a proactive approach to community engagement. Join us in our mission to support our heroes.
Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate and participate in local outreach events, workshops, and community fairs to connect with veterans and their families.
- Provide accurate and compassionate information regarding VA benefits, services, and local resources.
- Assist veterans with initial inquiries and direct them to appropriate DAV service officers or external agencies for detailed assistance.
- Maintain accurate records of outreach activities and interactions with veterans.
- Develop and distribute informational materials, brochures, and flyers.
- Build and maintain relationships with community partners, local government agencies, and other veteran support organizations.
- Support the planning and execution of veteran recognition and appreciation events.
- Gather feedback from veterans to help improve outreach strategies and service delivery.
Required Skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills with a compassionate and empathetic approach.
- Proficiency in basic computer applications (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Social Work, Public Administration, Communications, or a related field.
- Prior experience in community outreach, non-profit work, or veteran services.
- Familiarity with VA benefits and federal/state resources for veterans.
- Personal connection to the military community (e.g., veteran, military spouse, family member).
- Bilingual proficiency (especially Spanish).
