Job Description

AECOM is seeking a dedicated Coastal Paleontology Sorter with a strong focus on marine fossils to join our dynamic team in Decatur, Alabama. This essential role involves the meticulous processing, sorting, and preliminary identification of paleontological samples collected from coastal and marine environments. The successful candidate will play a critical part in the initial stages of our paleontological investigations, contributing to important research and conservation efforts.

Key Responsibilities

  • Meticulously sort bulk sediment samples to recover micro- and macro-fossils.
  • Perform initial cleaning, preparation, and basic identification of marine fossil specimens (e.g., mollusks, foraminifera, ostracods, fish teeth, microvertebrate remains).
  • Maintain detailed specimen inventories and accurate records of sorted material using established database protocols.
  • Assist with data entry and management for paleontological collections.
  • Prepare specimens for further analysis by paleontologists and specialists.
  • Adhere strictly to laboratory safety protocols and specimen handling best practices.
  • Participate in occasional field collection efforts in coastal environments as needed.
  • Contribute to general lab organization and maintenance.

Required Skills

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated meticulous attention to detail and patience for repetitive tasks.
  • Ability to work effectively with small tools (e.g., brushes, forceps) and under a microscope for extended periods.
  • Basic computer proficiency, including data entry.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to follow precise instructions and work independently or as part of a team.
  • Physical ability to lift and move sample boxes (up to 25 lbs) and stand for extended periods.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Geology, Biology, Paleontology, or a related field.
  • Previous experience in a laboratory setting, especially with geological or biological samples.
  • Familiarity with basic marine fossil morphology or identification.
  • Experience with microscopy and digital imaging.
  • Knowledge of paleontological curation and collection management principles.
