Job Description
Are you a motivated 14-year-old eager to develop leadership skills and make a difference in your community this summer? The YMCA of the Suncoast is seeking enthusiastic Camp Counselor Trainees for our summer programs in New Port Richey. This unique opportunity is designed for young teens who are passionate about working with children, learning the ropes of camp operations, and growing as future leaders. You will work alongside experienced counselors, gain hands-on experience in a supportive environment, and contribute to creating memorable summer experiences for younger campers.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist senior camp counselors in supervising groups of younger children (ages 5-12) during daily activities.
- Participate actively in camp games, crafts, sports, and educational programs.
- Help set up and clean up activity areas, ensuring a safe and organized environment.
- Model positive behavior, sportsmanship, and respect for all campers and staff.
- Learn and practice basic first aid and safety procedures under supervision.
- Engage with campers, encouraging participation and fostering a sense of belonging.
- Assist with snack and lunch distribution, ensuring all campers are well-cared for.
- Attend all required training sessions and weekly staff meetings.
- Shadow experienced counselors to understand effective communication and group management techniques.
Required Skills
- Must be 14 years old by the start of the camp season.
- Strong enthusiasm for working with children.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Positive attitude and a willingness to learn and grow.
- Ability to follow instructions and work effectively as part of a team.
- Reliable and punctual attendance.
- Genuine interest in leadership development and community service.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience as a camper or participant in youth programs.
- Basic knowledge of camp songs, games, or craft activities.
- Current certification in CPR and First Aid (or willingness to obtain with assistance).
