Job Description

We are seeking an exceptional Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) to lead our innovative research and development initiatives, with a particular focus on advancing our nascent tech ventures. This pivotal role requires a visionary leader who can set the scientific strategy, build and mentor world-class scientific teams, and translate cutting-edge research into impactful products and services. The CSO will be instrumental in shaping the scientific direction of our next-generation technologies, fostering a culture of scientific excellence, and driving intellectual property development. Key Responsibilities

  • Define and articulate the overall scientific vision and strategy for the company, aligning with business objectives and market needs.
  • Lead, mentor, and expand a high-performing team of scientists, researchers, and engineers across various disciplines.
  • Oversee all research and development activities, from conceptualization and experimental design to data analysis and publication.
  • Drive the discovery and development of novel technologies and scientific platforms, ensuring scientific rigor and ethical standards.
  • Establish and maintain strategic collaborations with academic institutions, industry partners, and key opinion leaders.
  • Secure and manage research grants, intellectual property, and regulatory submissions as appropriate.
  • Present scientific findings and strategies to internal stakeholders, investors, and the broader scientific community.
  • Contribute to the commercialization strategy by providing scientific insights and supporting product development efforts.

Required Skills

  • Ph.D. in a relevant scientific discipline (e.g., Biology, Biochemistry, Neuroscience, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science with a focus on AI/ML in health).
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive leadership experience in scientific research and development, preferably within a tech startup or fast-growing biotech/med-tech company.
  • Proven track record of driving scientific innovation, securing patents, and bringing novel technologies from concept to advanced development.
  • Deep expertise in at least one key scientific area relevant to Verily's mission (e.g., genomics, proteomics, neurotechnology, AI/ML in healthcare, digital therapeutics).
  • Exceptional leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to inspire and manage diverse scientific teams.
  • Strong understanding of regulatory pathways (e.g., FDA) and clinical development processes.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in securing significant venture capital funding or non-dilutive grants.
  • Prior experience as a CSO or VP of R&D in a publicly traded or late-stage startup.
  • Extensive network within the scientific and tech innovation ecosystems.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and scale scientific operations from the ground up.
  • Publications in high-impact peer-reviewed journals.
