Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and talented Church Organist / Music Director to lead our worship services and cultivate our musical ministries. This stable weekend role is central to enhancing our congregational worship experience through high-quality sacred music. The ideal candidate will be proficient on the organ, capable of directing a choir, and possess a deep understanding of liturgical music. You will work collaboratively with the pastoral staff to plan and execute musical elements for regular services, special events, and holiday celebrations, fostering a spirit of musical excellence and participation within our church family.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary organist for all regular weekend worship services, including accompanying hymns, anthems, and other liturgical elements.
  • Direct and rehearse the church choir weekly, selecting appropriate anthems and musical pieces.
  • Collaborate with the Pastor to plan music for all worship services, ensuring musical selections align with liturgical themes and calendar.
  • Prepare and perform prelude, offertory, and postlude music, demonstrating a high level of musicianship and artistry.
  • Recruit, mentor, and encourage participation in the music ministry.
  • Oversee the maintenance and tuning of the organ and other musical instruments within the church.
  • Plan and coordinate music for special services (e.g., Christmas, Easter, Maundy Thursday) and other church events as needed.
  • Manage the music budget in consultation with church leadership.
  • Maintain and expand the church's music library.

Required Skills

  • Proficiency in organ performance across various styles of sacred music.
  • Experience in choir direction and vocal coaching.
  • Strong understanding of Christian liturgy and hymnody.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse groups.
  • Ability to select appropriate music for worship services.
  • Basic knowledge of music theory and composition.
  • Demonstrated leadership in a church or similar musical setting.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Music, Organ Performance, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience as a Church Organist or Music Director.
  • Familiarity with various church music traditions.
  • Experience with other instruments (e.g., piano, handbells) is a plus.
  • Certification in church music or sacred music.
