Job Description

Join Stantec as a Desert Paleontology Monitor, where you will play a crucial role in protecting paleontological resources during construction and development projects across Utah and Nevada. This position requires extensive travel and fieldwork in remote desert environments. You will be responsible for identifying, documenting, and recovering fossils, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations, and communicating findings effectively. Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct daily paleontological monitoring during ground-disturbing activities in various desert environments across Utah and Nevada.
  • Identify, document, and recover fossil specimens in accordance with agency-specific permits and protocols.
  • Perform preliminary field identification and assessment of fossil significance.
  • Maintain detailed daily field notes, photographic logs, and GPS records of all findings and activities.
  • Prepare concise and accurate daily, weekly, and final monitoring reports.
  • Coordinate closely with construction crews, project managers, and regulatory agencies.
  • Implement and adhere to all health and safety protocols specific to remote field operations.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local paleontological resource management regulations.
  • Operate and maintain field equipment, including GPS units, cameras, and excavation tools.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Paleontology, Geology, Earth Sciences, or a closely related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of professional experience in paleontological field monitoring or resource management.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify fossils common to the Western United States (Utah and Nevada preferred).
  • Proficiency in using GPS devices and field data collection applications.
  • Strong understanding of paleontological resource management laws and regulations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for reporting and stakeholder interaction.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in challenging outdoor conditions for extended periods.
  • Valid driver's license and a clean driving record.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and hike rugged terrain.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree or higher in Paleontology or a related field.
  • Experience working under specific Bureau of Land Management (BLM) paleontological permits.
  • Proficiency with GIS software for mapping and data analysis.
  • First Aid/CPR certification.
  • Off-road driving experience and mechanical aptitude for remote vehicle maintenance.
