Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Digital Archivist with a strong focus on photographic assets to join our remote team. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to the preservation and accessibility of Shopify’s expansive and growing collection of digital photos, videos, and multimedia content. As a Digital Archivist, you will play a crucial role in organizing, cataloging, and maintaining our digital asset management (DAM) system, ensuring that our visual history is accurately documented and easily retrievable for future use by internal teams across marketing, product, and content creation. This 100% remote role requires a keen eye for detail, a passion for visual storytelling, and expertise in metadata standards and digital preservation best practices.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement robust digital archiving strategies and workflows specifically for photographic and multimedia content.
- Ingest, organize, and catalog new and existing digital assets into our DAM system, applying consistent metadata standards (IPTC, XMP, Dublin Core, etc.).
- Perform quality control on all archived assets, ensuring high resolution, correct file formats, and adherence to branding guidelines.
- Conduct regular audits of the digital archive to identify and resolve discrepancies, ensuring data integrity and accessibility.
- Manage and optimize keywords, tags, and descriptive information to enhance searchability and retrievability of assets.
- Collaborate with content creators, marketing teams, and legal departments to understand asset needs and ensure compliance with licensing and usage rights.
- Research and stay current with best practices in digital preservation, metadata management, and digital asset management technologies.
- Assist in developing training materials and providing support to internal users on DAM system usage and best practices.
- Contribute to the long-term strategic planning for digital asset growth and preservation.
- Identify and implement tools and processes for automated metadata extraction and image recognition where appropriate.
Required Skills
- 2+ years of experience in digital archiving, digital asset management (DAM), or library science, with a strong focus on visual media.
- Proficiency with DAM systems (e.g., Bynder, Adobe Experience Manager, Widen, Canto).
- Expertise in metadata standards (IPTC, XMP, Dublin Core, MODS) and controlled vocabularies.
- Strong understanding of various digital image and video file formats, codecs, and resolution requirements.
- Demonstrated ability to manage large volumes of digital assets with meticulous attention to detail.
- Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a remote team environment.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Proficiency with image editing software (e.g., Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom) for basic asset review and processing.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Library Science, Archival Studies, Information Science, or a related field.
- Experience with script writing (e.g., Python) for automating metadata tasks or data migration.
- Familiarity with intellectual property rights, copyright, and licensing pertaining to digital media.
- Experience working in a fast-paced technology or e-commerce environment.
- Knowledge of accessibility standards for digital content.
