Job Description

The University of Arkansas Museum is seeking a dedicated and passionate Ethnomusicologist (Assistant) to join our dynamic team. This full-time, on-site position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the preservation, research, and interpretation of diverse musical traditions. The successful candidate will work closely with our curatorial staff to expand our understanding of musical cultures through collection management, scholarly research, and public engagement initiatives. As an Assistant Ethnomusicologist, you will play a crucial role in documenting, cataloging, and interpreting ethnographic collections with a focus on sound and musical instruments. You will support ongoing research projects, assist with exhibition development, and contribute to educational programs designed to share the rich tapestry of global music with our community and beyond. This position is ideal for an emerging scholar with a strong foundation in ethnomusicology and a desire to apply their expertise in a museum setting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the research, documentation, and interpretation of ethnomusicological collections.
  • Perform detailed cataloging of musical instruments, recordings, and related archival materials according to museum standards.
  • Support the development and implementation of exhibitions, public programs, and educational initiatives related to global musical cultures.
  • Conduct scholarly research, contributing to publications, presentations, and grant applications.
  • Collaborate with internal departments and external partners on projects that enhance the museum's outreach and impact.
  • Respond to research inquiries from scholars, students, and the general public.
  • Participate in fieldwork and collection acquisition efforts as needed.

Required Skills

  • Master's degree in Ethnomusicology, Musicology, Anthropology, or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of various musical cultures and traditions.
  • Strong research, analytical, and writing skills.
  • Proficiency in at least one relevant foreign language.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Ethnomusicology or a related field (or ABD status).
  • Previous experience in a museum, archive, or cultural institution.
  • Familiarity with museum collection management software (e.g., TMS, EMu).
  • Experience with grant writing and project management.
  • Specific regional or thematic expertise (e.g., Appalachian music, Indigenous music of the Americas).
  • Experience with digital humanities tools and methodologies.
