Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Forest Service Paleontology Technician to join our team in Fort Worth, TX. This is an exciting outdoor career path for individuals passionate about preserving paleontological resources within our national forests and grasslands. The successful candidate will assist paleontologists in fieldwork, laboratory analysis, and data management, contributing directly to the protection and understanding of ancient life forms. Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct paleontological surveys and inventories in various field settings.
  • Assist with the excavation, collection, and documentation of fossils.
  • Prepare and stabilize fossil specimens in the field and laboratory.
  • Maintain detailed field notes, photographs, and GPS data for all findings.
  • Operate and maintain field equipment safely and effectively.
  • Assist in the preparation of technical reports and paleontological resource assessments.
  • Adhere to all safety protocols and environmental regulations.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, including archaeologists and biologists.

Required Skills

  • Strong interest in paleontology, geology, or related earth sciences.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work in outdoor environments, often in challenging terrain and weather conditions.
  • Excellent observational skills and attention to detail.
  • Proficiency with basic hand tools and field equipment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel for fieldwork.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Paleontology, Geology, Archaeology, Anthropology, or a closely related field.
  • Prior experience in paleontological fieldwork, archaeological surveys, or biological field studies.
  • Familiarity with GPS devices and mapping software (e.g., ArcGIS).
  • Experience with fossil preparation and curation techniques.
  • First Aid/CPR certification.
