Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Hazardous Materials Chemist with a strong focus on Safety & Compliance to join our team in Lexington, KY. In this critical role, you will be responsible for ensuring the safe handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials, as well as maintaining strict adherence to all local, state, and federal regulations. This position requires a thorough understanding of chemical properties, hazard communication standards, and environmental health and safety (EHS) protocols. You will play a key role in developing and implementing safety programs, conducting risk assessments, and providing expert guidance to ensure our operations meet the highest standards of safety and compliance.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct chemical analysis and characterization of hazardous materials.
- Develop, implement, and monitor safety procedures and protocols for handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous substances.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant environmental, health, and safety (EHS) regulations (OSHA, EPA, DOT, RCRA, etc.).
- Prepare and maintain detailed records, reports, and documentation related to hazardous materials management and compliance.
- Provide training to staff on hazardous materials safety, spill response, and emergency procedures.
- Perform regular site inspections and audits to identify potential hazards and ensure adherence to safety standards.
- Investigate incidents, near misses, and chemical spills, determining root causes and recommending corrective actions.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including operations, logistics, and regulatory affairs, to integrate safety and compliance into all processes.
- Stay informed of new regulations, industry best practices, and technological advancements in hazardous materials management.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Science, or a related field.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in hazardous materials management, chemical safety, or environmental compliance.
- In-depth knowledge of OSHA, EPA, DOT, and RCRA regulations.
- Proficiency in chemical identification, classification, and risk assessment.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to develop and deliver effective safety training programs.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in a related field.
- Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) or other relevant professional certifications (e.g., CSP, CIH).
- Experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment.
- Familiarity with laboratory information management systems (LIMS).
- Experience with SDS management and authoring.
