Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Junior Field Investigator to join our natural history team. This entry-level position is perfect for recent graduates or individuals with a passion for environmental science and ecology, eager to gain hands-on experience in field data collection and environmental assessment. The successful candidate will assist senior investigators in various natural history projects, focusing on flora, fauna, and habitat surveys. This role requires significant time spent outdoors in diverse environmental conditions and a commitment to accurate data recording.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct field surveys to identify and document various species of flora and fauna, under supervision.
  • Collect environmental data including soil samples, water quality measurements, and habitat assessments.
  • Operate and maintain field equipment such as GPS units, cameras, and specialized survey tools.
  • Accurately record and manage field data using tablets, notebooks, and other designated systems.
  • Assist in the preparation of field reports and data summaries.
  • Adhere to strict safety protocols and environmental regulations during all field activities.
  • Collaborate effectively with team members and communicate findings clearly.
  • Travel to various field sites as required, often involving irregular hours and overnight stays.

Required Skills

  • Basic knowledge of ecological principles and natural history.
  • Proficiency in data collection and meticulous record-keeping.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in challenging outdoor conditions.
  • Strong observational skills and attention to detail.
  • Valid driver's license and a clean driving record.
  • Physical fitness to perform duties including walking long distances, lifting moderate weights, and working in varied weather conditions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Biology, Ecology, Natural Resource Management, or a related field.
  • Prior experience with GPS devices and GIS software.
  • Basic identification skills for local flora and fauna (e.g., birds, plants, insects).
  • First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Experience with remote sensing technologies or camera traps.
