Job Description

We are seeking a highly organized and detail-oriented Laboratory Operations Manager with an administrative chemistry focus to oversee the daily operational activities of our chemistry laboratories in Berkeley, California. The ideal candidate will ensure the smooth and efficient functioning of lab facilities, equipment, and resources, with a strong emphasis on administrative support, compliance, and safety within a chemistry-intensive environment. This role is crucial for maintaining our high standards of research and development, requiring excellent leadership, administrative, and technical skills.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and oversee the daily operations of multiple chemistry laboratories, ensuring optimal functionality and resource allocation.
  • Develop, implement, and enforce laboratory administrative policies, procedures, and safety protocols to ensure compliance with company standards and regulatory requirements (e.g., GLP, GMP, OSHA).
  • Administer inventory control for chemicals, reagents, consumables, and laboratory supplies, including procurement, receiving, and storage.
  • Coordinate and track equipment maintenance, calibration, and repair schedules, ensuring minimal downtime and accurate record-keeping.
  • Manage chemical waste disposal programs, ensuring adherence to environmental regulations and safe handling practices.
  • Oversee the onboarding and training of new laboratory personnel on operational procedures, equipment usage, and safety guidelines.
  • Act as a primary liaison with vendors, contractors, and internal departments for laboratory services and supplies.
  • Monitor and manage the laboratory operational budget, tracking expenditures and identifying cost-saving opportunities.
  • Support internal and external audits by providing necessary documentation and ensuring laboratory readiness.
  • Implement and maintain a robust Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) for sample tracking, data management, and operational reporting.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related scientific field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in laboratory operations, with at least 2 years in a management or supervisory role.
  • Demonstrated strong administrative and organizational skills, particularly in a chemistry laboratory setting.
  • In-depth knowledge of laboratory safety regulations (OSHA, EPA) and best practices for chemical handling and waste disposal.
  • Proficiency with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) and other lab management software.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to lead and motivate a team.
  • Proven ability to manage budgets and control operational costs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a scientific, business administration, or related field.
  • Experience in a pharmaceutical, biotechnology, or chemical manufacturing R&D environment.
  • Certification in laboratory safety, quality management (e.g., Lean Six Sigma), or project management.
  • Familiarity with GxP regulations (GLP, GMP) and quality assurance processes.
  • Experience with capital equipment procurement and installation.
