Job Description
Join our dynamic team as an Entry-Level Micropaleontology Sorter. This on-site role is perfect for individuals with a keen eye for detail and an interest in earth sciences and laboratory work. You will be responsible for meticulously sorting microscopic fossils from sediment samples, primarily using stereomicroscopes. This position offers an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a geological laboratory setting, contributing to important environmental and geological studies. No prior professional experience in micropaleontology is required, as comprehensive training will be provided.
Key Responsibilities
- Carefully sort and pick microfossils (e.g., foraminifera, ostracods, nannofossils) from prepared sediment samples under a stereomicroscope.
- Mount individual microfossils onto slides or into micropaleontological slides for further analysis.
- Maintain accurate records of sample processing and fossil occurrences.
- Clean and maintain laboratory equipment, particularly microscopes and sorting trays.
- Adhere to strict laboratory safety protocols and quality control procedures.
- Assist with basic sample preparation tasks as needed, such as washing and sieving sediments.
- Collaborate with senior paleontologists and geologists on various projects.
Required Skills
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Exceptional attention to detail and patience.
- Strong manual dexterity for handling small objects.
- Basic computer proficiency for data entry.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Genuine interest in geology, paleontology, or related earth sciences.
Preferred Qualifications
- Some college-level coursework in geology, biology, environmental science, or a related field.
- Previous experience using a microscope (e.g., in academic lab settings).
