Job Description

Join Huntington Ingalls Industries as a Nanotechnology Research Intern, contributing to cutting-edge projects within our advanced materials and research divisions. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a state-of-the-art clean room environment, supporting the development and characterization of nanomaterials critical for next-generation defense and maritime technologies. You will work alongside experienced scientists and engineers, assisting with experiments, data collection, and analysis, playing a vital role in our innovation pipeline. Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the preparation and characterization of nanomaterials in a clean room environment.
  • Operate and maintain specialized laboratory equipment, including microscopy and spectroscopy tools.
  • Perform experiments under the guidance of senior researchers, ensuring adherence to safety protocols.
  • Collect, organize, and analyze experimental data, presenting findings to the research team.
  • Contribute to the upkeep and calibration of clean room facilities and instruments.
  • Document research procedures, results, and observations thoroughly.
  • Participate in team meetings and contribute to scientific discussions.

Required Skills

  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's or Master's degree program in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Physics, Nanotechnology, or a related field.
  • Basic understanding of nanotechnology principles and clean room procedures.
  • Ability to work meticulously and adhere to strict safety protocols.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in data collection and basic statistical analysis.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous laboratory experience, particularly in a clean room or with nanomaterial synthesis/characterization.
  • Familiarity with characterization techniques such as SEM, TEM, AFM, XRD, or Raman spectroscopy.
  • Experience with scientific software (e.g., MATLAB, Python for data analysis).
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
