Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Oversize Load Pilot Driver for an Escort Vehicle Role. This is a 100% remote position, requiring you to operate an escort vehicle for oversized and overweight loads across various states, ensuring compliance with all state and federal regulations. Your primary responsibility will be to ensure the safe passage of specialized cargo, protecting both the load and the general public. This role demands exceptional situational awareness, communication skills, and a strong commitment to safety protocols.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate a pilot/escort vehicle to safely guide oversized loads along designated routes.
- Maintain constant communication with the truck driver and relevant authorities via two-way radio.
- Monitor traffic conditions, road hazards, and potential obstructions, providing timely warnings.
- Manage traffic control, including directing vehicles and pedestrians, when necessary, to ensure safe passage.
- Adhere strictly to all state and federal Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations for oversized load escorting.
- Complete all required documentation, including daily logs, route reports, and incident reports.
- Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the escort vehicle and equipment.
- Assist with minor roadside issues or emergencies as needed, maintaining a safe environment.
Required Skills
- Valid Class C (or higher) Driver's License with a clean driving record.
- Proven experience in commercial driving or a related field (2+ years).
- Thorough knowledge of DOT regulations and state-specific oversize/overweight permit requirements.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, capable of clear and concise instruction.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to react quickly and calmly in dynamic situations.
- Proficiency in defensive driving techniques and hazard perception.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a remote and mobile environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience as an oversize load pilot or escort driver.
- Certification in First Aid and CPR.
- Possession of specialized state permits or certifications for pilot car operations.
- Basic mechanical aptitude for minor vehicle maintenance or troubleshooting.
- Experience with electronic logging devices (ELDs) and navigation software.
