Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Pediatric Pharmacy Technician to join our specialized team within a children’s hospital environment. In this crucial role, you will support our pharmacists in providing pharmaceutical care tailored to the unique needs of pediatric patients, from neonates to adolescents. Your responsibilities will include accurate medication preparation, inventory management, and ensuring the safe and efficient delivery of medications. This position requires meticulous attention to detail, a strong understanding of pediatric dosages, and a genuine commitment to patient safety and well-being in a dynamic, fast-paced setting.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare, label, and dispense medications accurately under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist, with a strong focus on pediatric dosages and formulations.
- Compound sterile and non-sterile preparations, including IV admixtures, TPN, and oral suspensions, strictly adhering to sterile technique and safety protocols for pediatric patients.
- Manage medication inventory, including ordering, receiving, stocking, and rotating supplies, ensuring proper storage conditions for temperature-sensitive medications.
- Assist with medication reconciliation and patient history collection as needed.
- Maintain accurate patient records and medication profiles, documenting all relevant information.
- Utilize automated dispensing systems (e.g., Pyxis) and electronic health records (EHR) efficiently.
- Communicate effectively with pharmacists, nurses, physicians, and other healthcare professionals to ensure optimal patient care.
- Handle and dispose of hazardous materials in accordance with established safety guidelines.
- Perform routine quality control checks and maintain a clean, organized work environment.
- Participate in continuing education and training to stay current with best practices in pediatric pharmacy.
- Provide exceptional customer service to patients, families, and healthcare team members.
Required Skills
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent
- Active Pharmacy Technician certification (CPhT) through PTCB or NHA
- Current Florida Pharmacy Technician registration
- Minimum of 1 year of experience as a Pharmacy Technician, preferably in a hospital or clinical setting
- Proficiency in sterile compounding and aseptic technique
- Strong mathematical skills for dosage calculations and conversions
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work accurately and efficiently in a fast-paced environment
- Attention to detail and problem-solving abilities
- Basic computer proficiency and experience with pharmacy software
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in a related field
- Prior experience specifically in a pediatric pharmacy or children's hospital environment
- Experience with electronic health record systems (e.g., Cerner, Epic)
- Knowledge of specific pediatric medication guidelines and protocols
