Job Description

We are seeking a diligent and compassionate Professional Hospital Porter to join our vital support team. In this crucial role, you will be responsible for the safe and timely transportation of patients, equipment, specimens, and medical records throughout the hospital environment. Your work will directly contribute to the smooth operation of our services, ensuring patients receive the care they need efficiently and with dignity. This position requires a strong commitment to patient safety, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced healthcare setting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Safely transport patients, including those with limited mobility, between wards, departments, and clinics using appropriate equipment (wheelchairs, beds, trolleys).
  • Move medical equipment, furniture, specimens, blood products, and confidential records as required, adhering to all safety protocols.
  • Assist with the transfer of deceased patients to the mortuary, showing respect and empathy.
  • Maintain cleanliness and functionality of transport equipment, reporting any faults or damage promptly.
  • Communicate effectively and courteously with patients, visitors, and staff, providing reassurance and assistance as needed.
  • Respond promptly to requests for portering services, managing time and tasks efficiently.
  • Adhere strictly to infection control policies and procedures.
  • Contribute to a positive and supportive working environment.
  • Undertake any other duties appropriate to the grade as required by management.

Required Skills

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a compassionate and patient-centred approach.
  • Good physical fitness and stamina, with the ability to safely lift, push, and pull equipment and patients.
  • Reliability and punctuality, with a strong work ethic.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work effectively as part of a team.
  • Understanding of the importance of confidentiality and discretion in a hospital environment.
  • Basic literacy and numeracy skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in a portering or healthcare support role.
  • Knowledge of manual handling techniques and patient safety.
  • First Aid certification.
