Job Description

We are seeking a meticulous and linguistically astute Pronunciation Checker to join our growing content team, focusing on enhancing the audio quality and accuracy within our language learning applications. In this role, you will be instrumental in ensuring that our users receive the most authentic and precise pronunciation guidance possible. You will work closely with linguists, audio engineers, and product managers to review, evaluate, and provide feedback on audio recordings for various languages, specifically focusing on phonetic accuracy, natural intonation, and clarity in a digital learning environment. This position requires an exceptional ear for detail, a strong understanding of phonetics and phonology, and a passion for language education technology.

Key Responsibilities

  • Rigorously review and analyze audio recordings for multiple languages within Duolingo's applications.
  • Identify and document pronunciation errors, inconsistencies, or areas for improvement in recorded speech.
  • Provide constructive, detailed feedback to audio engineers and voice talent, ensuring linguistic accuracy.
  • Collaborate with lead linguists to establish and refine pronunciation guidelines and standards for various language courses.
  • Assist in the development and testing of new tools or features related to audio and pronunciation checking.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of phonetic transcription standards (e.g., IPA) and language-specific phonological rules.
  • Participate in quality assurance processes to ensure a high standard of audio content before release.

Required Skills

  • Exceptional ear for detail and keen auditory discrimination skills.
  • Strong understanding of phonetics and phonology, including familiarity with the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA).
  • Proficiency in at least two languages (one native-level, one advanced-level) with a deep understanding of their sound systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify subtle pronunciation nuances and deviations.
  • Experience with audio editing software or linguistic analysis tools.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities and a proactive approach to quality assurance.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Linguistics, Phonetics, Speech-Language Pathology, or a related field.
  • Prior experience in a quality assurance role for audio content, language learning materials, or educational technology.
  • Experience working with remote teams or distributed content contributors.
  • Familiarity with agile development methodologies.
  • Experience with A/B testing or user feedback incorporation related to audio content.
