Job Description

The City of Oceanside Parks and Recreation Department is seeking a dedicated and skilled Public Lands Groundskeeper to maintain the aesthetic appeal, safety, and functionality of our city’s diverse public lands. This includes parks, sports fields, common areas, and natural open spaces. The ideal candidate will possess a strong work ethic, a passion for outdoor work, and a commitment to public service. You will perform a variety of landscaping and maintenance tasks, ensuring our public spaces are beautiful and accessible for everyone.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform routine landscape maintenance tasks including mowing, trimming, edging, and weeding.
  • Plant, water, fertilize, and prune trees, shrubs, and flowers.
  • Operate and maintain various groundskeeping equipment such as mowers, trimmers, blowers, and light vehicles.
  • Maintain irrigation systems, including minor repairs and adjustments.
  • Clean and maintain park facilities, restrooms, and and common areas.
  • Remove litter, debris, and hazardous materials from public lands.
  • Assist with the setup and breakdown for special events in parks.
  • Inspect grounds for hazards, damage, or unauthorized activities and report findings.
  • Adhere to safety regulations and maintain a safe working environment.

Required Skills

  • Knowledge of basic horticulture and landscape maintenance practices.
  • Ability to operate groundskeeping equipment safely and effectively.
  • Physical stamina and ability to perform strenuous outdoor work in various weather conditions.
  • Valid California Class C Driver's License.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality work.

Preferred Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Previous experience in public works, park maintenance, or commercial landscaping.
  • Knowledge of integrated pest management (IPM) techniques.
  • Certification in pesticide application (QAL/QAC) or willingness to obtain.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish.
