Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated Smart Home Sound Classifier with an Internet of Things (IoT) focus to join our innovative team in Oxford. In this role, you will be instrumental in developing and refining the auditory intelligence of our smart home devices. You will work with vast datasets of environmental sounds, human speech, and device interactions, classifying them to improve the accuracy and responsiveness of our IoT products. This position requires a keen ear for detail, a foundational understanding of machine learning concepts, and a passion for creating seamless smart home experiences. You will collaborate closely with AI/ML engineers, product managers, and UX designers to bring next-generation auditory features to life.

Key Responsibilities

  • Annotate and classify large volumes of audio data, identifying specific sound events, patterns, and contexts relevant to smart home environments.
  • Develop and maintain detailed annotation guidelines and quality control processes to ensure data integrity and consistency.
  • Collaborate with machine learning engineers to train, test, and validate sound classification models, providing critical feedback for iterative improvements.
  • Identify and troubleshoot issues related to sound recognition performance, proposing solutions and contributing to algorithm refinement.
  • Stay updated with the latest advancements in audio processing, machine learning, and IoT technologies.
  • Contribute to the design and implementation of new auditory features for smart home devices.
  • Participate in cross-functional team meetings, sharing insights and contributing to product strategy.

Required Skills

  • Strong attention to detail and excellent auditory perception skills.
  • Proficiency in data annotation tools and methodologies.
  • Basic understanding of machine learning principles, particularly in classification tasks.
  • Experience with data analysis and interpretation.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Linguistics, or a related discipline.
  • Experience with audio processing software or digital audio workstations (DAWs).
  • Familiarity with Python or other scripting languages for data manipulation.
  • Understanding of IoT ecosystems and smart home device functionalities.
  • Prior experience in sound design, acoustics, or speech recognition.
  • Knowledge of cloud platforms (e.g., Google Cloud Platform, AWS, Azure).
