Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and compassionate individual for the role of Lead Patient Porter with a strong focus on Management Training. This is an exceptional opportunity for someone with experience in patient transport or similar roles to step into a leadership position while actively developing their management skills. You will play a crucial role in coordinating and leading a team of patient porters, ensuring the safe, efficient, and dignified movement of patients, equipment, and sensitive items within our hospital. This role offers a clear pathway for professional growth into future management positions within our Trust, with structured training and mentorship provided.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead, supervise, and coordinate the daily activities of the patient portering team.
  • Ensure the safe and timely transport of patients, medical records, specimens, equipment, and supplies throughout the hospital.
  • Act as a point of contact for staff queries and issues, escalating to management where necessary.
  • Implement and maintain high standards of patient care, safety, and dignity during all transport activities.
  • Assist with the training and induction of new porters, ensuring adherence to Trust policies and procedures.
  • Conduct regular checks on equipment, reporting any faults or maintenance needs promptly.
  • Monitor team performance and contribute to performance reviews under the guidance of management.
  • Participate in management training programs, workshops, and mentorship sessions.
  • Support management in rostering, resource allocation, and operational planning.
  • Maintain accurate records of transport activities and complete necessary documentation.

Required Skills

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a compassionate approach.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team and lead by example.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving abilities.
  • Physical stamina and ability to perform tasks involving lifting, pushing, and walking for extended periods.
  • Basic IT literacy for record-keeping and communication.
  • A proactive attitude with a willingness to learn and develop management competencies.
  • Understanding of health and safety regulations, particularly within a healthcare setting.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in a patient transport, portering, or similar customer service role within a hospital setting.
  • Experience in a supervisory or team leader capacity (even informal).
  • NVQ Level 2 in Health & Social Care or equivalent qualification.
  • First Aid certification.
  • A valid UK driving license (desirable but not essential for this specific role).
