Job Description
We are seeking dedicated and experienced Oversize Load Pilot Drivers to join our team in a remote capacity. As an Escort Vehicle Role, you will be crucial in ensuring the safe and efficient transport of oversize and overweight loads across various routes. This is a 100% remote-based position, allowing you to operate from your home base for administrative and dispatch purposes, while requiring extensive travel and on-site presence to escort loads as needed. You will be responsible for providing accurate and timely warnings to the general public, managing traffic flow around the load, and communicating effectively with truck drivers and other personnel to navigate challenging routes safely. Key Responsibilities
- Safely operate a pilot/escort vehicle in front of or behind oversize/overweight loads.
- Maintain constant communication with the truck driver, local authorities, and other pilot drivers.
- Manage traffic to ensure the safe passage of the oversize load, including lane closures and diversions.
- Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the escort vehicle and equipment.
- Adhere strictly to all state and federal regulations for oversize load movements.
- Complete necessary paperwork, permits, and logs accurately and submit them remotely.
- Provide clear and concise directions and warnings to the public and other motorists.
- Adapt to changing road conditions, weather, and unexpected obstacles efficiently.
- Ensure all safety equipment, including signs, flags, and lights, are functional and properly displayed.
Required Skills
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
- State-specific pilot car certifications (e.g., Washington state pilot car certification) or ability to obtain.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Strong understanding of DOT regulations pertaining to oversize loads.
- Ability to read maps, use GPS, and plan routes effectively.
- High level of situational awareness and problem-solving abilities.
- Comfortable with extensive travel and working flexible hours, including nights and weekends.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience with a national transportation or logistics company.
- First Aid/CPR certification.
- Experience with various types of oversize loads (e.g., wind energy components, heavy machinery).
- Familiarity with electronic logging devices (ELDs) and digital dispatch systems.
