Job Description
Join the Smithsonian Institution as a Paleobotany Research Aide, focusing on plant fossil analysis in a fully remote capacity. This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to significant scientific research from your home office in Pasco, Washington. You will support our paleobotanical research team by assisting with data organization, digital imaging, literature review, and preliminary analysis of plant fossil specimens. This is an ideal position for someone with a keen interest in paleontology, botany, or geology, eager to gain hands-on (or rather, ‘hands-on-digital’) experience in a world-renowned scientific organization.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with the digital cataloging and organization of plant fossil specimens and associated data.
- Perform high-resolution digital imaging of plant fossils and prepare images for research and publication.
- Conduct literature searches and summarize relevant scientific papers on paleobotany and plant evolution.
- Maintain detailed records and databases of research findings, adhering to established protocols.
- Contribute to the preparation of research reports, presentations, and scientific manuscripts.
- Collaborate remotely with senior researchers and fellow team members through virtual meetings and communication tools.
- Ensure accuracy and consistency in all data entry and documentation tasks.
Required Skills
- Strong organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail.
- Proficiency in basic computer applications (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite, Google Workspace).
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
- Ability to work independently and manage time effectively in a remote work environment.
- Basic understanding of scientific terminology and research methodologies.
- High degree of self-motivation and a proactive approach to problem-solving.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or current enrollment in a program related to Paleontology, Botany, Geology, Biology, or a closely related field.
- Prior experience with scientific data entry, database management, or digital imaging.
- Familiarity with botanical or paleontological nomenclature.
- Experience with image editing software (e.g., Adobe Photoshop, GIMP).
- Demonstrated interest in plant fossils or ancient ecosystems.
