Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and civic-minded Legislative Aide Intern to join our district office in Ithaca. This internship provides an invaluable opportunity to gain hands-on experience in state government operations, legislative affairs, and constituent services. The intern will support the Assemblymember and staff in various capacities, contributing to the efficient functioning of the office and its outreach initiatives. This role is ideal for students or recent graduates passionate about public policy, community development, and the democratic process.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with constituent communication, including drafting responses to letters, emails, and phone calls.
  • Conduct legislative research on current bills, policy issues, and community concerns.
  • Support district office operations, including administrative tasks, scheduling, and event coordination.
  • Attend local community meetings and events on behalf of the office, as needed.
  • Help manage social media content and website updates to engage with constituents.
  • Prepare briefing materials and summaries for the Assemblymember and senior staff.
  • Collaborate on special projects related to community outreach or specific policy initiatives.

Required Skills

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong research and analytical abilities.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated interest in public service, government, or political science.
  • High level of professionalism and discretion.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Political Science, Public Administration, Communications, or a related field.
  • Prior experience in an office setting, volunteer work, or community engagement.
  • Familiarity with local government and community issues in the Ithaca area.
  • Basic knowledge of legislative processes.
