Job Description
As a Fine Art Conservator / Restorer, you will play a crucial role in safeguarding and maintaining the Museum’s diverse and invaluable collections. You will be responsible for the examination, documentation, and treatment of artworks, ensuring their long-term stability and aesthetic integrity. This position involves working closely with curators, collections managers, and other specialists to support exhibitions, loans, and research projects. Your expertise will directly impact the longevity and accessibility of our shared heritage for future generations. Key Responsibilities
- Undertake comprehensive examination, condition reporting, and photographic documentation of artworks across various media.
- Plan, propose, and execute conservation treatments, ranging from preventive care to complex restoration interventions, adhering to ethical conservation principles.
- Prepare artworks for exhibition, loan, and storage, including mounting, framing, and packing as required.
- Contribute to environmental monitoring, pest management, and disaster preparedness initiatives for collection care.
- Conduct research into materials, techniques, and historical contexts of artworks and conservation methodologies.
- Collaborate effectively with curatorial, technical, and academic staff on collection-related projects and exhibitions.
- Maintain detailed digital and physical conservation records and reports.
Required Skills
- A recognised postgraduate qualification in conservation or a related field.
- Demonstrable practical experience (minimum 4 years) in the conservation and restoration of fine art, with a strong portfolio of completed projects.
- In-depth knowledge of art historical periods, materials, and artistic techniques.
- Proficiency in various conservation treatment methodologies and preventative conservation strategies.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills for documentation and collaboration.
- Meticulous attention to detail, manual dexterity, and advanced problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Preferred Qualifications
- Specialisation in a particular area of fine art conservation (e.g., easel paintings, polychrome sculpture, works on paper).
- Experience with collection management databases and digital imaging software.
- A proven track record of contributing to research or publications in the field of conservation.
- Experience in training or mentoring junior conservators or interns.
