Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Plastic Processing Chemist with a strong focus on recycling and eco-friendly solutions to join our dynamic R&D team in Pasco, WA. This role is crucial for developing and optimizing chemical processes for the sustainable production and recycling of various plastic materials. The successful candidate will drive innovation in polymer chemistry, material science, and process engineering to enhance the circularity of plastics, reduce environmental impact, and contribute to BASF’s ambitious sustainability goals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, conduct, and interpret experimental studies on polymer synthesis, modification, and processing with an emphasis on recycling technologies.
  • Develop and optimize chemical processes for the mechanical and chemical recycling of diverse plastic waste streams.
  • Characterize physical, chemical, and mechanical properties of virgin and recycled plastic materials using advanced analytical techniques.
  • Collaborate with engineering and production teams to scale up new processes from lab to pilot and commercial scale.
  • Identify and evaluate new technologies, catalysts, and additives to improve the efficiency and quality of recycled plastics.
  • Analyze process data, troubleshoot issues, and implement solutions to enhance product performance and process robustness.
  • Ensure compliance with all safety regulations, environmental standards, and quality management systems.
  • Prepare detailed technical reports, presentations, and contribute to patent applications and scientific publications.
  • Mentor junior scientists and actively participate in cross-functional project teams.

Required Skills

  • Ph.D. in Polymer Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.
  • 3+ years of industrial experience in plastic processing, polymer synthesis, or materials characterization.
  • Proven expertise in various plastic recycling technologies (e.g., mechanical recycling, pyrolysis, solvolysis).
  • Strong understanding of polymer structure-property relationships and degradation mechanisms.
  • Proficiency with analytical techniques such as GPC, DSC, TGA, FTIR, NMR, SEM, and mechanical testing.
  • Experience with process optimization, statistical analysis, and experimental design (DoE).
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and a proactive approach to research and development.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for technical reporting and collaboration.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Post-doctoral experience in sustainable plastics or circular economy initiatives.
  • Experience with bioplastics or biodegradable polymers.
  • Knowledge of process modeling and simulation software.
  • Familiarity with intellectual property processes and patent landscapes.
  • Leadership experience in R&D projects.
