Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Paleontology Project Lead to join our dynamic research team. This pivotal role involves overseeing all phases of paleontological projects, from initial site assessment and fieldwork to laboratory analysis, curation, and publication. The successful candidate will lead diverse teams, manage resources, ensure compliance with scientific standards and regulations, and contribute significantly to our ongoing research efforts. This position requires a passion for discovery, exceptional leadership skills, and a proven track record in paleontological research.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage multiple paleontological projects from conception to completion, including budget and timeline adherence.
- Conduct and supervise fieldwork, including fossil excavation, data collection, and site documentation.
- Oversee laboratory preparation, conservation, and curation of fossil specimens.
- Analyze paleontological data and contribute to scientific publications, reports, and presentations.
- Mentor junior staff, interns, and volunteers, fostering a collaborative and educational environment.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant permits, regulations, and ethical guidelines for paleontological research.
- Collaborate with internal departments, external partners, and funding agencies.
- Develop and implement outreach programs and educational initiatives to share discoveries with the public.
- Manage project resources, including equipment, supplies, and personnel.
Required Skills
- Ph.D. in Paleontology, Geology, or a related field.
- Minimum of 5 years (60 months) of post-doctoral or equivalent professional experience in paleontological research and project management.
- Demonstrated expertise in vertebrate or invertebrate paleontology, including fieldwork and laboratory techniques.
- Strong leadership and team management skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
- Proficiency in GIS, stratigraphic analysis, and paleontological data management software.
- Proven track record of scientific publication and grant writing.
- Ability to work effectively in challenging field conditions.
- Valid driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with a variety of geological formations and fossil localities.
- Familiarity with the paleontology of the North American Mid-Continent region.
- Experience in museum curation practices and collection management.
- Ability to secure external funding for research projects.
- Experience with public outreach and science communication initiatives.
