Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled and safety-conscious Heavy Lift Forklift Driver to join our dynamic team at the Norfolk terminal. This role involves operating various heavy-duty forklifts to move, stack, and retrieve materials, containers, and other heavy cargo within our busy industrial site. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience with large-capacity forklifts, a strong commitment to safety, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, demanding environment. This is a critical role that supports our operational efficiency and contributes directly to the smooth flow of goods through the port.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate heavy lift forklifts (e.g., up to 30 tons capacity) safely and efficiently to load, unload, stack, and move materials within the terminal.
- Perform pre-operation and post-operation checks on equipment, including fluid levels, tires, brakes, and other safety components, reporting any defects or malfunctions immediately.
- Adhere strictly to all company safety protocols, procedures, and traffic management plans.
- Secure loads properly and ensure materials are transported without damage.
- Read and interpret work orders, dispatch instructions, and safety manuals.
- Maintain accurate records of materials moved, equipment usage, and maintenance logs.
- Assist with other general labor or operational duties as required, contributing to overall team productivity.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors, dispatchers, and other team members.
Required Skills
- Proven experience (minimum 3 years) operating heavy lift forklifts (e.g., Kalmar, Hyster, Linde, Caterpillar) in an industrial or port environment.
- Valid forklift certification for heavy equipment operation.
- Strong understanding of workplace safety procedures and regulations, particularly in a high-traffic industrial setting.
- Excellent hand-eye coordination and spatial awareness.
- Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including climbing, lifting, and standing for extended periods.
- Basic mechanical aptitude for minor equipment troubleshooting.
- Ability to work various shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Preferred Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Experience with container handling or breakbulk cargo.
- Knowledge of port operations and logistics terminology.
- Additional heavy equipment certifications (e.g., reach stackers, top loaders).
- Proficiency in basic computer systems for data entry and record-keeping.
