Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Forensic Chemist with a focus on Toxicology to join our state-of-the-art Crime Lab. The successful candidate will perform complex chemical and instrumental analyses on various types of evidence related to criminal investigations, with a primary emphasis on the detection and quantification of drugs, alcohol, and poisons in biological samples. This position involves expert witness testimony, comprehensive report writing, and adherence to rigorous quality control standards in a fast-paced government laboratory setting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct chemical and instrumental analyses of forensic evidence, focusing on toxicology and controlled substances.
  • Operate and maintain a variety of sophisticated laboratory equipment, including GC-MS, LC-MS/MS, FTIR, and immunoassay systems.
  • Develop, validate, and implement new analytical methods for the detection and quantification of forensic analytes.
  • Interpret complex analytical data and write clear, concise, and scientifically sound laboratory reports.
  • Provide expert witness testimony in court regarding analytical findings and forensic methodologies.
  • Maintain meticulous chain of custody for all evidence handled and processed.
  • Participate in proficiency testing programs and internal/external quality assurance audits.
  • Adhere to laboratory safety protocols and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Collaborate with law enforcement personnel, attorneys, and other scientific experts.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Forensic Science, Toxicology, or a closely related field from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum of 2 years of professional experience in a forensic toxicology or analytical chemistry laboratory.
  • Proficiency in operating and troubleshooting analytical instrumentation such as GC-MS, LC-MS/MS, and FTIR.
  • Strong understanding of analytical chemistry principles, toxicology, and forensic methodologies.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex scientific information clearly.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team in a high-volume laboratory environment.
  • Meticulous attention to detail and commitment to maintaining accurate records and chain of custody.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree or Ph.D. in Forensic Chemistry, Toxicology, or a related scientific discipline.
  • Certification by the American Board of Forensic Toxicology (ABFT) or equivalent.
  • Previous experience providing expert witness testimony in legal proceedings.
  • Knowledge of ASCLD/LAB accreditation standards and quality management systems.
  • Experience with LIMS (Laboratory Information Management Systems) for data entry and report generation.
