Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and meticulous Midwest Paleontology Lab Assistant to join our research team. This position is crucial for the ongoing success of our paleontological studies, involving the preparation, conservation, and cataloging of fossil specimens. The Lab Assistant will work closely with paleontologists and graduate students, contributing to both ongoing research projects and the maintenance of our valuable collections. This is an excellent opportunity for an individual passionate about natural history and scientific research to gain hands-on experience in a stable academic environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare fossil specimens for study, including mechanical cleaning, consolidation, and repair.
  • Assist with the cataloging and data entry of new and existing specimens into institutional databases.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment and ensure a clean, organized, and safe working environment.
  • Support fieldwork logistics, including packing and inventory of supplies, and occasional participation in excavations.
  • Perform basic photography and imaging of specimens for research and publication.
  • Assist with the organization and curation of fossil collections.
  • Adhere to all safety protocols and institutional guidelines for specimen handling and lab procedures.

Required Skills

  • Strong attention to detail and manual dexterity.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Proficiency with basic computer applications (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to follow precise instructions and maintain accurate records.
  • Physical ability to lift up to 25 lbs and perform tasks requiring standing, bending, and fine motor skills for extended periods.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Geology, Biology, Paleontology, or a related field.
  • Prior experience working in a museum, university, or research laboratory setting.
  • Familiarity with fossil preparation techniques and paleontological terminology.
  • Experience with database management systems for collections.
