Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated Junior Drilling Engineer with a strong focus on Mechanical Design to join our dynamic team in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. While the role title reflects a project focus often associated with our Houston operations, this position is physically based at our innovative Cedar Rapids engineering hub. This entry-level position is ideal for recent graduates or early-career professionals eager to apply their mechanical engineering knowledge to the challenges of drilling technology. You will contribute to the design, analysis, and optimization of drilling equipment and tools, ensuring reliability and performance in demanding environments. Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the mechanical design and development of drilling tools and equipment, including CAD modeling and drafting.
  • Conduct stress analysis, fatigue analysis, and other engineering calculations to ensure design integrity.
  • Prepare technical documentation, including design specifications, test plans, and manufacturing drawings.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including manufacturing, supply chain, and field operations, to support product lifecycle.
  • Participate in design reviews and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Support testing and validation of new and existing drilling technologies.
  • Learn and apply industry standards, safety protocols, and best practices in all engineering activities.
  • Troubleshoot and provide technical support for drilling equipment as needed.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Inventor, Creo).
  • Strong understanding of mechanical design principles, material science, and manufacturing processes.
  • Familiarity with stress analysis techniques and finite element analysis (FEA) concepts.
  • Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Previous internship or co-op experience in the oil & gas industry or a heavy machinery manufacturing environment.
  • Experience with PDM/PLM systems.
  • Knowledge of drilling operations and downhole tools.
  • Basic understanding of fluid dynamics and thermodynamics.
