Job Description
We are seeking an experienced and dynamic Policy Communications Lead with a strong focus on High Street (retail and consumer-facing) PR to join our corporate communications team in Durban. This pivotal role involves shaping and communicating our policy positions, particularly those affecting our everyday customers and local communities. You will be instrumental in translating complex regulatory and economic policies into clear, accessible messages for the public, media, and internal stakeholders, ensuring our brand narrative is consistent and positive across all ‘High Street’ interactions and touchpoints.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and execute comprehensive policy communication strategies that align with Standard Bank's business objectives and public affairs goals, with a strong emphasis on retail banking and consumer impact.
- Translate complex policy and regulatory information into clear, concise, and engaging communications for a diverse audience, including media, customers, and employees.
- Manage proactive and reactive media relations for policy-related issues, acting as a key spokesperson or preparing senior leaders for interviews on High Street relevant topics.
- Monitor and analyze policy developments, legislative changes, and public sentiment, providing strategic advice and recommendations to senior management.
- Collaborate closely with government relations, legal, compliance, and marketing teams to ensure integrated and consistent messaging.
- Develop compelling communication materials, including press releases, briefing documents, Q&As, speeches, social media content, and internal communications.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with key journalists, industry influencers, and consumer advocacy groups relevant to High Street banking.
- Provide communications support for crisis management related to policy issues affecting retail customers and branches.
Required Skills
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in policy communications, public relations, or corporate affairs, with a demonstrable focus on retail, consumer, or 'High Street' sectors.
- Proven track record of developing and implementing successful communication strategies.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to simplify complex information.
- Strong media relations experience, including proactive pitching and reactive issues management.
- In-depth understanding of the South African media landscape and political environment.
- Excellent stakeholder management and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Bachelor's degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Political Science, or a related field.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in a relevant discipline.
- Experience working within the financial services industry or for a large, publicly traded company.
- Proficiency in an additional South African official language.
- Crisis communications experience.
