Job Description
We are seeking a diligent and motivated Hospital Waste Operative to join our facilities team. In this critical role, you will be responsible for the safe and efficient collection, segregation, and disposal of all waste streams, including clinical, domestic, and recyclable materials, across our hospital site in Watford. Your work will directly contribute to maintaining a hygienic environment, preventing infection, and ensuring compliance with environmental regulations. This is an essential position that supports the overall operational efficiency and cleanliness of our healthcare facility.
Key Responsibilities
- Collect, transport, and dispose of clinical waste, domestic waste, and recyclable materials from wards, departments, and public areas according to established procedures and health and safety guidelines.
- Ensure proper segregation of waste streams at the point of collection to comply with regulatory requirements and trust policies.
- Operate waste compaction and processing equipment safely and efficiently.
- Clean and maintain waste storage areas, bins, and equipment to a high standard of hygiene.
- Report any equipment malfunctions, health and safety hazards, or non-compliance issues promptly.
- Assist with the delivery and distribution of clean linen and collection of soiled linen as required.
- Maintain accurate records of waste collections and disposals where necessary.
- Adhere to all Trust policies and procedures, including those related to infection control, health and safety, and environmental protection.
Required Skills
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions accurately.
- Understanding of basic health and safety principles.
- Physical fitness and ability to perform manual handling tasks.
- Good communication skills.
- Reliability and punctuality.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in a waste management or facilities role, particularly within a healthcare environment.
- Knowledge of waste segregation protocols, especially for clinical waste.
- Basic understanding of COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) regulations.
- Full UK driving licence (advantageous for moving between hospital sites if required).
