Job Description

We are seeking enthusiastic and detail-oriented 14-year-old teens to join our team as Library Pages at the Chula Vista Public Library, Eastlake Branch. This is an excellent opportunity for young individuals to gain their first work experience in a supportive and quiet environment. The primary responsibilities include accurately shelving library materials, maintaining the organization of our collections, and ensuring a tidy and welcoming atmosphere for all patrons. This role is ideal for those who enjoy quiet work, have a keen eye for detail, and are eager to contribute to their community.

Key Responsibilities

  • Accurately sort and shelve books, periodicals, and other library materials according to the Dewey Decimal System or alphabetical/numerical order.
  • Maintain the neatness and order of shelves, ensuring materials are in their correct locations and easy for patrons to find.
  • Perform shelf-reading to identify misplaced items and ensure proper shelving arrangement.
  • Assist library staff with basic tasks such as retrieving requested materials, tidying public areas, and preparing materials for circulation.
  • Respect the quiet nature of the library environment while performing duties.
  • Adhere to all library policies and procedures, including safety guidelines.

Required Skills

  • Must be 14 years of age at the time of application.
  • Ability to read and understand English for shelving purposes.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions precisely.
  • Ability to perform repetitive tasks such as lifting, bending, stretching, and pushing loaded book carts.
  • Reliability, punctuality, and a strong work ethic.
  • Basic communication and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Interest in books, reading, and the library environment.
  • Prior experience volunteering or helping in a structured setting (e.g., school, community center).
  • Familiarity with the Chula Vista Public Library system.
