Job Description
Yale University Library seeks a dedicated and innovative Digital Archivist with a strong focus on historical data to join our team. This role is crucial for managing and preserving complex digital assets, particularly those derived from or mimicking social media platforms like Pinterest, as well as other forms of born-digital content with significant historical value. The successful candidate will be instrumental in developing and implementing strategies for the long-term preservation, access, and usability of digital collections, ensuring their integrity and discoverability for future generations of scholars and researchers. This position requires a deep understanding of digital preservation best practices, metadata standards, and the unique challenges posed by web-based and highly visual data.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement digital preservation strategies and workflows for diverse historical data collections, including web-harvested content and social media archives.
- Manage the ingest, description, and preservation of born-digital materials, applying appropriate metadata schemas and archival standards.
- Conduct research and evaluate emerging technologies and best practices in digital archiving, particularly for visual and user-generated content platforms.
- Collaborate with curators, IT professionals, and other library staff to ensure seamless integration of digital archives into existing systems and services.
- Create and maintain documentation for digital archiving processes, policies, and procedures.
- Provide expert guidance and training on digital preservation topics to colleagues and researchers.
- Assess and mitigate risks to digital collection integrity and access over time.
- Contribute to grant proposals and special projects related to digital historical data preservation.
Required Skills
- Proficiency in digital archiving software and tools (e.g., Archivematica, Preservica).
- Strong understanding of metadata standards (e.g., EAD, DACS, Dublin Core, PREMIS).
- Experience with data management, normalization, and migration techniques for digital assets.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and implement digital preservation policies and workflows.
- Familiarity with web archiving tools and methodologies.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Library Science, Archival Studies, Information Science, or a related field from an ALA-accredited program.
- Experience with social media archiving platforms or managing large visual datasets.
- Knowledge of programming languages such as Python or R for data manipulation and analysis.
- Experience in a large academic or research library environment.
- Project management experience in digital initiatives.
